She appeared with the name Shilpa. Then the network gave her the chance to work as an anchor after her classes. Since then, she got offers to do the Pambam Super-Hit Film Songs on Vijay TV. She also did few films at the beginning of her career; she has starred in movies like Priyamanavale where she appeared as the sister of Simran. Then she quickly shifted to doing television serials because she did not find her desired success in doing films and she preferred the fixed schedules of shooting the serials. She rose to fame in the popular Vijay TV serial, Chinna Chinna Aasai or Small Desires in English in 1994. Shilpa took a short hiatus when her mother got ill. She made a surprise comeback on Sun TV’s Chellamae.

She played the role of AC Sivaranjini, a cop who changes the case to save her brother, Moorthy. She was also starred in K. Balachanders, Shanthi Nilayam, which was aired on Jaya TV. She played as a lobbyist and received a positive response from the audience. She also appeared on Sun TV’s, Vasantham where she played a negative character and spoke Tamil. Shilpa is a perfectionist, and she always makes sure that she does her homework before she signs on the serials she was in. She is the only television actress who likes to buy her own costumes for the different roles she portrays. In her role in the Tamil serial, Nimmadhi, she played the role of Nandini Devi and the whole production of the show praised her for her costume as a rich girl. Shilpa’s elder sister, Nirmala, supports her on her acting career, and she was the one behind Shilpa’s collection of costumes.

Shilpa also says that of all the serials that she did, Nimmadhi gave her a reputed name in the industry. She played the role of the rich Nandhini Devi, who desires to marry the son of her own aunt. The story evolves on the vindictive act of Nandhini, which destroys her upliftment. In the end, she dies as she offers her apologies to the whole family. Her character as Nandhini Devi gave her many opportunities to act in several television soaps. She did the serials like Bandham, Vennilamma on Gemini TV and Thamarai under the direction of Dhanraj. Shilpa has plans to direct television serials in the future if she is given a chance.

She also joined the reality dance show, Jodi Number One on STAR Vijay, along with Bharath Kalyan but they failed to win the prize.
